Day 11 Easter Sunday 20 April

Left Aberdeen this morning to travel to Inverness. Decided to go the coastal route. Before I say where we went I’ve been meaning to write two facts that we’ve noted since we got here but I kept forgetting! Here they are:

1. There is more roundabouts in this country than 200,000 Toowoomba’s put together! Seriously we have never seen so many roundabouts!

2. We are the only two in the whole of the UK who do the speed limit! I even got beeped the other day because I was doing 30 mph in a 30 mph zone! Rude bastard! Honestly no one pays any attention and yet there are a million signs saying speed cameras, we are obviously the only two who believe the signs!

Ok rant over - just before Peterhead, we saw these highland cows! I made Gary stop and I went back to take a photo. I’m running along the side of the road calling out “cow, cow, stop,” and the cow kept going in the opposite direction to me! It finally stopped, turned and looked at me and then ran off!

Dan and Delaney, you have together some of these! They are so cute!

Coming into Peterhead - most easterly point of Scotland

View from side of road.

Onto Fraserburg - a really nice place with lighthouse museum.

Streets in Fraserburg
North Sea view

The Wine Tower - not named for housing wine, but is rumoured to be haunted. The lightkeepers daughter fell in love with a piper. The dad was furious and locked him in a cave under this tower and he drowned. The daughter threw herself off the rocks and apparently you may hear his haunting bagpipes and the rocks become red from her blood! Otherwise quite a pleasant place!

This lighthouse was built on top of the castle, first one ever!

Street of Fraserburg

Sonic sounds used in thick fog. It would emit 7 second blast every 75 seconds so the ships would know they were near Fraserburg! Used up til 1987.

More streets of Fraserburg

Onto Macduff and Banff - such beautiful places.

Lead on Macduff!

Famous Spotty Bag shop - apparently! This shop had just about everything in it!
On to Portsoy, a just gorgeous little place! A 17th century historic harbour

A memorial to a Mike Gray killed at the site in 2022 by the Peaky Blinders?

Dolphins sculpture. We met some people here we thought were taking photos but they had telescopes looking for birds, whales etc. They were telling us there had been a pod of orcas sighted at Peterhead and Fraserburg yesterday! Buggar!

Another view

More of the memorial

More of the harbour! The seagulls are so big and everytime I hear them I think I’m at Port Wen with Doc Martin!

The view of the coast from the headland at Portsoy.

On to Cullen, where we had lunch
Cullen headland

Making lunch!

Beach at Cullen
Headed inland to Culloden Battlefield. However saw turn off to Brodie Castle and stopped there first! Just like a fairytale. An amazing place, been in the Brodie family for over 800 years and they have equipped it to entertain families, it was pretty amazing. Going back tomorrow to do a tour of the actual castle.
Flower gardens

Brodie Castle

Battle of Culloden, just the most amazing and yet sad place! 1500 Jacobites lost their like in a fight between the government (led by Duke of Cumberland) and the Jacobites ( led by Bonnie Prince Charles)
Funny thing is both sides were full of English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and French!

The hospital used by the Government side

A memorial for the highlanders who fought for the Jacobites

Sign when you enter
The red flags represent where the government troops lined up on the field. Further over but harder to see were the blue flags for the Jacobites who were defeated by the government. 1500 lives lost for them and 50 for the government!
A picture of the battle in the museum

The memorial

A wall on the visitor centre with 1500 rocks sticking out. The rocks represent every Jacobite life lost.

Gary standing where the battle occurred! It was a really amazing place!
Off to Inverness and our motel for the next two days.
