Day 7 Wednesday 16 April
Up early this morning to head off to Stirling. What a great place, full of history!
The Battle of Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce defeated Edward 11 on 23-24 June 1314. By 1314 the Scots laid siege to Stirling Castle. The two sides made a deal. If the English king and his army reached the castle by 24 June, then the castle would stay in English hands. If not the Scots would regain control. Robert the Bruce won this battle and to stand on the grounds where it all occurred is surreal! The history here is so amazing!
Plaque on the statueStatue of Robert the Bruce
The camp site where Robert the Bruce set up. Key events during the first day of battle took place in view of here. Awesome information here and a great set up!
This sits high on a hill overlooking Stirling. He is revered as a great hero here. His story is amazing!
Doune Castle where Overlander, Monty Python and the Holt Grail and Game of Thrones were all filmed. It was cold and raining but still a great place to see! Weather today has been between 6 and 10! Bloody freezing!
Me on top of William Wallace Monument, it was blowing an absolute gale! Really felt like you were going to be blown off! Scary as all hell!
Stirling bridge where the battle took place in 1297 between William Wallace and the English - again the Scots were victorious! Back then it was an old wooden bridge which collapsed. This one was built in 15th century
Information about the christening of Mary Queen of Scots son James who was christened in the Church of The Holy Rude
Saw the Kelpies on way home. They are a pair of monumental steel horse heads between Falkirk and Grangemouth. They form the eastern gateway of the Forth and Clyde Canal. Each head is 30 metres high!
Overall a long and tiring day but just wonderful! Photos all mixed up but they fell where they may and bit too tired tonight to sort them better! This was keeps you guessing! This area is just wonderful.
, love the history!
