Day 8 Thursday 17 April
Back into Edinburgh today. Wanted to see Holyrood Palace where the royals stay when they come to Scotland. Set off a bit later, caught the bus in on another wet and cold day!
Wandered down the Royal Mile to the opposite end of Edinburgh Castle. Stopped in at the museum, such an interesting place!
Edinburgh museum
An inscription on this blade of this sword claims it was used by Oliver Cromwell during the Battle of Naseby (1645) and Dunbar (1650) however tests showed the sword is from the 1700’s! Cromwell died in 1658. It’s believed it was inscribed with his name to make the sword appear more valuable!
Queen Mary’s Bath House - it was once attached to a boundary wall and is traditionally associated with Mary Queen of Scott’s (1542-1537).
Side view of Kings Gallery
Across the road from the Palace is Parliament House - obviously both designed by the same architect - not!
Parliament House - does not fit in with the beautiful historical buildings on the Royal Mile! What were they thinking! From there went on to the National Gallery, this one was much further down towards the river
There were these amazing paintings all the was around the central section.
The Battle for Stirling Bridge
Then into the Malt Shovel for a wee dram (well a beer actually as we don’t drink drams!) π
Me and my nice drop of Belhaven Black
Nothing like a warm pub and a coldish beer to warm the cockles of your hearts!! Oliver Cromwell commenting on his alleged sword said, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet!" (Or words to that effect?) You're getting lots of blue sky so a bit of cold weather wont stop the siteseeing!!
ReplyDeleteBeer was actually cold which surprised us as we’d heard beer was warm here!
