Day 10 Saturday 19 April
Exploring Aberdeen today. Didn’t realise the city was so close to the harbour. The place we’re staying at is just down near the harbour.

Walked up to headland and read about the battery built there at Torry Point. It was built in 1860 to defend the port, harbour, trade and city of Aberdeen. It was manned in WW1 and 11 and was hit in 1941 from 500lb bombs, killing two soldiers. After the WW11 it was used as emergency accommodation for homeless families.
Despite repeated calls for its complete demolition and plans to turn it into a hotel, the remains were left relatively untouched. In 2000 it was given a measure of protection under law.

House from the outside, was saved from destruction by the Queen Mother in the 1950’s. Saw the following:
Kings College
Marischal College - founded in 1593 by George Keith 4th Earl of Marischal as a university. Said to be the second largest granite structure in the world after the Escorial in Spain. Today it forms the headquarters of Aberdeen City Council.
Memorial to Bishop Elphinstone 1431 to 1514. He was Bishop of Aberdeen, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland and founder of the University in 1495.
Back to house, 15.81 kms later! Off to Inverness tomorrow.
