Day 35 Wednesday May 14

Last day today with car so off to the following places

Stonehenge - what a place. It was amazing being somewhere so full of history but it is so commercialised! Over 1 million visitors a year and cost is quite high! We thought we might be able to come and take a few photos from the roadside! Couldn’t even see it from the roadside - you had to pay to go in! However didn’t come all this way and not see it? Beautiful day as well.

Gary in a pose - I wasn’t very good at it!

Stonehenge- an amazing place

The Barrows - burial mounds

Us pleased to be there! Photo taken by an Australian couple, Darryl and Trish from Logan way!

Sun shining

Me supposed to be resting my arm on Stonehenge! Someone just could not grasp the concept!

A different view

Stonehenge is a prehistoric temple, it’s great stones raised about 4,500 years ago! Very humbling! The stones are arranged to line up with the movement of the sun. The circular enclosure was constructed 5,000 years ago. About 500 years later enormous Sarsen stones were raised in a horseshoe and a circle with smaller bluestones placed between them. Construction ceased in the early Bronze Age!

On to Weymouth, a seaside beach further south. It’s on the Jurassic Coast and was quite lovely! More amusement parlours, Ferris wheels and merry go rounds.

People actually in the water! I wouldn’t say swimming, they just kind of sit there!

Off to Glastonbury. Gary is currently reading a Conn Iggulden  series focused quite heavily on Glastonbury Abbey and St Dunstan . He was the most important Saxon saint associated with Glastonbury. He was the Abbot here from AD940 to AD957, he reestablished the monastery after the Viking raids had disrupted most aspects of society in the 9th century. He was Archbishop of Canterbury from AD 940 until the monastic movement was dissolved in 1539 - Thanks to Henry V111! (Actually I think a couple of others may have been as well otherwise he was 599 when he died!) πŸ€”

Glastonbury is such a hippy town! Lots of young hippy people with witches, spells and magic type shops. Had

The Abbey
The Holy Well. It is believed that Joseph of Arimathea was the true founder of Glastonbury Abbey. He was a merchant and it is said he came to Glastonbury with eleven followers in AD 63.

They call this building The Tribunal. The 15th century building was a merchants house and shop and probably built and rented out by the Abbey. It was previously thought to have been the Abbeys Courthouse, hence the name.

St Patrick’s Chapel.

The kitchen of the Abbey - bigger than our house! And I bet a lot more cooking was done there!

A replica of what the Abbey would have looked like

We planned to walk up The Tor but had trouble finding it and we were just too tired! Wanted to get back to accommodation and get our luggage ready for tomorrow. Have to be up about 5am to get the car back to Heathrow and on the bus to Sheffield! Hopefully all goes well! 🀞🀞

Our accommodation in Bath. We were in the attic - Gary nearly knocked himself out three times. Great accommodation if you’re a midget!

Possibly no blog tomorrow as will be on the bus for a large part of the day! Trouble with photos today so will try tomorrow!

    1. It was such a relief to hand it in. Being on the bus was lovely! Someone else having to manoeuvre those teeny tiny roads!
