Day 43 Thursday May 22

What a day! Big day! Headed up to Binley to the Five Rise Locks. There was actually two boats waiting to go through as they were being closed off at 5pm. Canal Trust volunteers were there to work the mechanisms for them, so fascinating to watch. These locks were built in 1774 by local stonemasons. These locks raise boats 59ft 2 ins - can’t forget the 2ins! Over a distance of 320ft! It was amazing to watch - bit scary as it was so high up!

We had to turn the barges around here to head back on our return trip. Quite a few people sitting outside the cafe watching. Bob and Gary did a great job, not a problem. I’m sure we’ve appeared on that many videos as everyone videos you coming down the canal, going through the swing bridges, pushing the swing bridges open! It is all such an experience. Sometimes we walk along the towpath and meet up with the barge after they go through the swing bridges. It is freezing today so it is nice to warm up whilst walking!

Toilet problems! The toilet is full even though we were assured it would last us 7 days without any issues! Have to head back to Silsden tomorrow morning to have it pumped out! Very frustrating as it meant we had to turn the boat again - Gary and Bob again did a great job! The logistics of turning these long narrow boats is mind blowing! We are now facing towards Silsden and Gary and Bob will head off there tomorrow, about 45mins away and Graeme and Maureen are facing towards Skipton.

Headed into Killdrick for dinner at the Red Lion pub, not bad food. Popped up to the church to have a look inside and there were a group of bell ringers getting ready to practice. They meet up every Thursday evening. It was just great, they ranged in age from about 13 through to mid 60’s! They were so welcoming and happy to show us what they do! Great experience.

Still problems with photos as no wifi, virtually until we are in London on Sunday. Will be back on wifi proper and can add all the photos then! At the moment because the locks are closing the traffic on the canals is minimal so it is just lovely, quiet and peaceful!

Perfect reflection!
So peaceful
