 Off to explore Sheffield today. Sheffield was world famous for making cutlery and tableware.  By the 1200’s it was well known for producing good quality, affordable cutlery. Today it is no longer a city of mass production and mass employment. The firms that remain have had to adapt to the modern world. 

The teenage girls in this painting by Sir William Rothenstein in 1919,  are Maggie Herrick and Jane Gill. They both worked at Walker and Hall. The factory made silver, electroplate and Britannia metal goods. Women were largely responsible for the buffing process. 

 
This case contains samples of cutlery produced for display purposes. It includes 18 scissors, 10 razors, 50 folding knives, 2 bread knives, 6 table knives and 1 carving knife and fork. This case was made in 1901.

The Wintergarden opened by Queen Elizabeth and accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh on May 22 2002. It is a beautiful place, we sat and had lunch here, maybe a slight snooze! It was so peaceful

The Town Hall was completed in 1895 and officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1897. Saw a couple of registry office weddings occur here today. It also has these stars of fame, people born in Sheffield. Michael Pailin,  Joe Cocker, Def Leppard and Michael Vaughn (cricketer) just to name a few.

He really did enjoy the chip butty and the Corona!

Stopped for a wee beer and a chip butty in the Roebuck Tavern. Now had a haggis in Scotland, a traditional welsh cake in Wales and a Chip Butty in England! So well travelled, almost locals!

For dinner! On way home wandered up to London Rd not far from where we are staying. It is certainly a very cosmopolitan section of Sheffield! Lots of males of the middle eastern persuasion- only saw about 3 females and I was one of them! It was seriously like being in another country!

    Hate to tell you this but…..you are in another country…..
    Still enjoying those beautiful blue skies I see, very good management, it hasn’t stopped raining here, I’ve heard Kingscliff hill has been washed into the creek, I assume that’s fake news though???

      Bloody hell, you’re right , have just realised we are in another country! I hate it when you’re right! We’ve heard there’s been stacks of rain back home, hope the house is still there when we get back!

 Up early this morning to head off to Edinburgh. Freezing cold but brilliant sunshine. Decided to detour to Holy Island as tides were right. You only have a smallish window to get across the causeway and back! This is where Lindisfarne was founded. It was so busy but so worth the effort!
